NC State (4-3) won both games of a doubleheader against UNC Greensboro (0-2) on Wednesday afternoon to improve to 5-1 all-time against the Spartans. Abbie Sims won the opener, 4-0, to improve to 3-1 on the season after allowing a single hit and striking out nine batters. Megan Dalthorp struck out nine Spartans to even her record at 1-1 as NC State won 5-3 in the second game of the day.
Jen Chamberlin drove in four runs on the day and hit her first home run of the season in the second game off of Spartans' starter Vanessa Oakes (0-1). Hannah Angel (0-1) was the loser of the first game, as UNC Greensboro managed just one hit - an infield single - against Wolfpack starter Abbie Sims.
Sims allowed just two baserunners through five innings, striking out the side in the second inning. She had her no-hitter bid broken up in the sixth inning, as Krista Judge hit Sims in the foot for an infield single with one out. Judge moved to third on a wild pitch and a groundout, but Sims forced Jennifer Bonilla to line out to third to end the inning.
The offense scored twice in the first, aided by the mistake prone Spartans. Three errors by the defense and three hit batters by Angel allowed the runs to cross.
NC State scored a run each in the fifth and sixth innings, as Shanna Smith scored off of a Jen Chamberlin RBI single in the fifth for a 3-0 lead. Two Spartans' errors helped put another run on the board, as Harkey reached on an error by the third baseman and later scored off of another error by the shortstop for the final 4-0 advantage.
Sims finished with her first shutout of the season - and second one hitter - by striking out nine and walking just two batters.
Dalthorp allowed just four hits and struck out nine in the second game, as NC State won 5-3 for its third straight victory. UNC Greensboro took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Kara Clouser led off the inning with a solo home run to right centerfield before NC State took the lead for good.
Chamberlin and the offense responded in the bottom half of the inning when Heather Gelbard walked and Smith reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Harkey came in to run for Gelbard, and Sims advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Chamberlin followed with a three-run blast to straight away centerfield for a 3-1 Wolfpack lead.
That lead would grow to 5-1 in the fourth, as Dalthorp drew a leadoff walk and pinch runner Beth Poore scored on a wild pitch. Alycia LePage singled and later scored on the second wild pitch of the inning.
An error and infield single put two Greensboro runners on base and both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Judge doubled to right center to drive in both runners for the final margin as NC State won 5-3.
The Wolfpack softball team travels to Tucson, Ariz. for the Worth Wildcat Tournament this weekend and will face two ranked teams in Arizona and Missouri.
