
Gymnastics Finishes Close Second in Hearts Invite

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State gymnastics team finished with a team score of 193.325 to finish in second place at the annual Hearts Invitational hosted in Reynolds Coliseum Friday night. No. 16 Auburn won the close meet with a score of 193.400, with William & Mary placing third (187.975), and James Madison in fourth (183.825). Returning home for only the second meet this season, the Pack (7-4) notched its highest team score of the season, and highest team score on any event thus far with a 49.050 on floor.
NC State started the meet on vault and came away with a team score of 48.650, with four of the scores at 9.725. Sophomore Leigha Hancock notched the top score for NC State with a 9.75 for third place. Then it was a log jam for NC State with four gymnasts scoring a 9.725 and all tying for fourth; sophomore Heather Zolton, juniors Rachel Katz and Katie Ozburn, and senior Kylah Bachman.
The Pack then moved over to bars, and counting a fall, notched a team score of 47.800. Junior Amanda Jones was the top performer for NC State on bars, scoring a 9.7 for third place. Bachman scored a 9.675 and was fifth, Katz had a 9.65 and took sixth. Freshman Elyse Adams scored a 9.6 and placed eighth.
Over on beam, NC State also had to count a fall and posted a team score of 47.825. Hancock was once again the Pack's top finisher, scoring NC State season-high 9.825 for second place. Bachman scored a 9.75 for third, and Zolton was fourth with her 9.7.
NC State would end the meet with its top performance of the day on floor, with a team score of 49.050. For the third event, Hancock led the Pack. Hancock notched the third highest score on floor in NC State history with her 9.95 (one judge gave her a perfect 10.0) for her second title on floor this season. Freshman Ashley Shepard had a 9.825 and was fourth, and Zolton scored a 9.8 and was sixth. Rounding out the scoring was Bachman with a 9.75 for ninth and freshman Dru Davis with a 9.725 for 10th.
In the all-around, Bachman posted a season-high 38.900.
NC State will return to home action next weekend with a special meet at the RBC Center. On Sunday, February 19, the Pack will host both nationally ranked Florida and William & Mary in a special fundraising meet called Flip For a Cure. All proceeds from the meet will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Admission is $2 youth and $5 adult, with free parking at the RBC Center for the 4:00 meet.
All fans attending the NC State women's basketball game at 1:00 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum that afternoon can bring their ticket stub to the gymnastics meet and gain free admission to the Flip For a Cure gymnastics meet.
