The NC State men’s swimming and diving team (3-2 overall, 2-1 ACC) is taking time off for exams before hitting the pool for its annual midseason training event in preparation for the second half of the season. Fourteen NC State swimmers and divers hold top-10 ACC times in various events, with Steven Cowling and Stephen Mellor both holding impressive times in three different events.
When you look across the NC State results, an old name appears often - Steven Cowling. Cowling, a redshirt senior from England, has done it all in his Wolfpack career winning an ACC Championship as a redshirt sophomore year and earning all-ACC honors in all three seasons.
Cowling is off to another strong start this season, placing top-10 ACC times in the 100 butterfly (3rd, 48.89), 100 backstroke (2nd, 48.93) and the 200 individual medley (8th, 152.28).
His fellow countryman, Stephen Mellor, has had a breakout season after redshirting due to NCAA rules as a freshman last season. Mellor has two NCAA ‘B’ cuts already this season, in the 400 individual medley (second in the conference with a time of 3:53.08) and the 200 backstroke (second in the conference with a 1:46.27). Mellor, the school record holder in the 200 backstroke, is also second in the conference in the 200 IM (1:49.42).
Diving standout Austin Hampton is top-four in the conference in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards, and fellow diver Alex Dambly is eighth in the
Junior Jack Roney has certainly turned heads as one of the top breaststrokers in the ACC this season. He has a top-10 time in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, posting a ninth place showing in the 100 breast (57.04) and a seventh place standing in the 200 breast (2:03.17).
Nearly as impressive has been the performance of a handful of freshmen, particularly Mason McGee. McGee is third in the conference in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:38.59, making him the fourth fastest performer in the event in school history. McGee is also seventh in the 500 freestyle with a 4:27.88.
Freshman Kevin Woodhull-Smith has shined in the individual medley events, as he is ninth in the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.37.
Fellow newcomer Danny Voss is ninth in the ACC in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:05.23.
The future is indeed bright for the Wolfpack, as 33 of the Wolfpack’s 42 times on the team’s top-3 lists are freshmen or sophomores this season.
And with just one senior - Cowling - the future of Wolfpack swimming is on the rise.
Look for the women’s fall season recap that will be available tomorrow, Tuesday, December 18, only on GoPack.com.
