Jones, Velez Find Success at US Open

Cullen Jones once again won the 50 freestyle and Dan Velez turned in an impressive performance in the 100 breaststroke as two former Wolfpack swimmers competed at the US Open. The pair traveled to
Jones set a US Open record with his finals swim of 22.11 after placing first in the prelims with a 22.45.
“There are a few things I know I need to work on, but overall, it felt really good,” Jones said. “I took a little break coming into this meet, but nothing like the rest I’ll get with my taper in March. To see a 22.11 was very promising.”
Velez swam a 1:02.80 in the finals of the 100 breast to finish fourth after placing fourth in the prelims in the morning. Velez, a breaststroke specialist, swam a time that is nearly two seconds faster than the US Olympic Trials time.
