Men's Swimming Holds in 2nd at Terp Cup Invitational

The NC State men's swimming team is holding steady in second place heading into the final day of events at the Terrapin Cup Invite. With a total of 519 points, the men's team is just 79 points out of first place with one day remaining in the meet in College Park, Md.
The men's 200 medley relay team posted a time of 1:32.47 to finish third in the final heat, the fifth best time in the ACC this season. Stephen Mellor, Jack Roney, Steve Cowling and Travis Martinez composed the relay.
Mellor won the 400 IM with a time of 3:53.08, the fastest time in the ACC by more than four seconds. It was the second fastest time ever in school history. Kevin Woodhull-Smith, Andrew Lester and Danny Voss finished fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the finals heat.
Cowling won the consolation heat in the 100 butterfly, the tenth fastest time in school history and the fastest time in the ACC this season.
Mason McGee finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.59, the fastest time in the ACC this season and it made him the fourth fastest all-time.
Woodhull-Smith finished seventh and Jon Vorpagel came in eighth in the finals heat.
Roney finished sixth in the 100 breast with a 57.24 after swimming the fifth fastest time in the conference, a 57.04, in the prelims. Former Wolfpack breaststroker Dan Velez swam unattached and turned in a second place finish in the event.
Cowling finished second with an impressive 48.93, the fastest time in the ACC and one of the fastest of Cowling stellar career. Freshman Taylor Goodwin turned in a 50.89, the eighth fastest time in school history.
McGee, Vorpagel, Woodhull-Smith and Mellor turned in a second place finish in the 800 free relay with a 6:43.63, the fastest time in the conference. The Wolfpack 'B' squad finished fourth in the event.
