Men's Swimming 2nd at Terrapin Cup Invitational

The NC State men’s swimming and diving team scored 232 points to place second after the opening day of the Terrapin Cup Invitational in College Park, Md. Overall, the men’s and women’s squad combined for third in the meet after the first day of competition. The men were impressive in each of the main events on the afternoon finals session.
The 200 freestyle relay was first on the docket, and the men finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:23.29, the second fastest time in the ACC this season. Dan Glauber, Taylor Goodwin, Steve Cowling and Travis Martinez composed the team.
In the 500 freestyle, NC State finished 2-3, as Mason McGee continues to shine in his freshman season. McGee swam a 4:27.88 to finish second and shave 2.2 seconds off of his prelim time. That time was good enough for the fastest time in the ACC this season and the seventh fastest performance in school history.
Andrew Lester finished third with a time of 4:31.28, easily ranking him in the ACC top-10 this season.
Jon Vorpagel won the consolation heat with a time of 4:34.84.
The Wolfpack was impressive in the 200 IM, as Stephen Mellor won the event with a time of 1:49.42, the fifth fastest time in school history and the fastest time in the ACC by over two seconds.
Cowling finished fourth with a time of 1:52.28, the fourth fastest time in the ACC this season. Kevin Woodhull-Smith was close behind as he turned in a time of 1:52.37, the fifth fastest time in the ACC, to finish fifth in the event.
In the 50 freestyle, Travis Martinez swam a 21.19, the 10th fastest time in the ACC, to finish 10th in the event.
Wrapping up the team’s impressive day at the pool was the 400 medley relay, and NC State finished third with a time of 3:21.94, the third fastest time in the conference. Mellor, Jack Roney, Cowling and Goodwin all competed in the relay.
The event continues through Saturday and is hosted by the Maryland Terrapins.
