Wolfpack Swim & Dive at Terrapin Cup Invite

The NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams travel to College Park, Md., for the 2006 Terrapin Cup Invitational. The event is mirrored after the NCAA Championship meet and is a top event on the Wolfpack’s schedule. At last year’s Terrapin Cup, the men’s team won the event and the women’s team finished second overall. The three day event features 14 women’s teams and 12 men’s squads.
The men’s squad is the defending champion is led in the water by Stephen Mellor and Steve Cowling. Mellor has the fastest time in the ACC in the 200 backstroke this season with a 1:48.78. he has the third fastest time in the conference in the 200 individual medley (1:52.97) and is ninth in the 200 butterfly (1:52.53).
Cowling is the third fastest in the conference in the 100 backstroke with a 50.62, and fifth in the 100 butterfly at 50.60.
A pair of freshman also rank in the ACC top-10. Mason McGee is eighth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.30 amd Kevin Woodhull-Smith is fifth with a 1:53.24.
Junior Jack Roney is 10th in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:07.72.
Sophomore diver Austin Hampton is third in both the 1-meter (348.61) and 3-meter boards (366.80). His three-meter time is a school record.
Fellow sophomore diver Alex Dambly is seventh in the conference with a time of 339.98.
The women’s team will look to duplicate it’s second place finish from last season, and will be led by senior’s Lindsay Barwegen, Kerry Whitson, Amy Baskwell, Melissa Jamerino and Laura Neely.
Freshman Patrice Dason has made a name for herself in the 100 butterfly, as she currently ranks seventh in the ACC with a 56.99.
The women’s divers continue to shine, as freshman Emily Cheffins is first in the conference in the 1-meter (306.98) and and sixth in the 3-meter (293.20).
In fact, the Wolfpack is 1-2-3 in the 1-meter, as behind Cheffins is Chelsea Ale (302.70) and Natalie Swisher (300.98). Ale and Swisher are 7-8 behind Cheffins in the 3-meter as well.
The event runs Nov. 16-18 with prelims in the morning and finals in the evenings.
