NC State Men Fall to No. 14 Tennessee, 140-103

The NC State men’s swimming and diving team fell to No. 14 Tennessee in a non-conference meet to open the season on Saturday afternoon. Despite falling in the opening relay, NC State answered early with a 1-2 sweep of the 1000 freestyle as sophomore’s Andrew Lester (9:31.66) and Cole Yarborough (9:44.95). Lester won the 500 free as a well in a time of 4:35.37 as he was led the Wolfpack with two event wins. Diver Austin Hampton joined him by winning both the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions.
Mason McGee finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.30 to lead a trio of Pack swimmers that finished 2-3-4. Jon Vorpagel was third and Travis Martinez was fourth.
In the 50 freestyle, NC State took fourth and fifth place as Steve Cowling (21.54) and Taylor Goodwin (21.96) combined for five team points.
Stephen Mellor turned in the first of his two second place finishes in his first collegiate meet, swimming a 1:52.97 in the 200 IM and a 1:48.78 in the 200 back.
Hampton won the 1-meter competition by just under 10 points, scoring a 307.73. He followed that up later in the meet with a win in the 3-meter with a score of 345.16.
Goodwin turned in another fine performance with a 46.70 in the 100 freestyle.
Yarborough finished third in the 500 with a time of 4:48.36, and Nick Brittis was fourth with a time of 4:50.42 as Lester won his second event of the evening.
Jack Roney took second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:07.72 and Danny Voss turned in a third place finish in the event.
