Swimming & Diving Team Opens with Intrasquad Meet

One of the more exciting races of the evening pitted freshman Mason McGee against sophomore distance standout Andrew Lester in the 500 freestyle. McGee and Lester were dominate early and both kept pace throughout the multiple laps across the 25 yard pool. Heading into the final 50 yards, Lester held a .9 second lead over the freshman, but a final 50 yard split of 25.44 pushed him past Lester by .11 seconds.
It was McGee's first win of the evening and he would follow it up later with a win in the 200 yard butterfly. But his heroics for the "Red" team wasn’t enough as the "White" team won eight of the 13 events on the evening.
Jon Vorpagel (Red) won the 200 free, All-ACC standout Steve Cowling (White) took the 100 back and Jack Roney (White) took the 100 breast in the first half of the meet.
Redshirt sophomore Stephen Mellor continued to impress in his top event, the 200 back, in the event that he already holds the school record in.
Mellor and Cowling squared off in the 100 butterfly in a much anticipated show down of the English players, with Cowling taking the win for the "White" squad.
One of the comedic highlights of the night came when the "White" team used a bit of strategy to earn extra points. Co-captain Brian Crowder, a freestyle specialist, swam the 100 backstroke against ACC champion Cowling and talented freshman Kevin Woodhull-Smith. Crowder was instantly over matched of course, and cruised to just over 17 seconds behind Cowling. The crowd of parents and teammates erupted of course, but the "White" team would ride that strategy home to the win.
