Wolfpack Splits Home Meet With Maryland
The Wolfpack men's and women's swimming and diving teams split their home meet with Maryland last Saturday. The men's team destroyed the Terps 152-76 with strong performances from the usual cast. Swimmers Cullen Jones, Kevin Velleca, and diver Austin Hampton led the way each picking up at least one victory and record or conference high. The women's team fell to Maryland but kept the meet very close, with the final talley of 127-113. The team had a chance to pick up the meet in the final event, the 200 Freestyle Relay, but came up just short as Maryland touched in first and third places to secure the win. The women's team picked up big points with Lindsay Barwegen winning the meet's two distance events and diver Molly Culberson snatched convincing victories in the two diving events.
Culberson Picks Up Award for ACC Top Performer of The Week
Wolfpack senior diver Molly Culberson has been bringing home wins all season long in both the one-meter and three-meter events. Now she is bringing home some hardware. Culberson was named the ACC's Top Women's Performer of The Week for the first time this season coming off of her record setting performance in the Pack's home meet against Maryland. Culberson set the facility and school records for the three-meter event, breaking her own previous record of 346.20 (the school record) by scoring an impressive 357.60. Culberson moved into second place in the conference with that score and stormed into the conference's top spot in the one-meter event posting a score of 319.84, also a pool record.
Record Setting Day For The Wolfpack Against The Terps
That shattering sound you hear is the sound still reverberating in the Casey Natatorium from the records falling at the hands of hungry Wolfpack swimmers on Saturday against Maryland. The Pack received record breaking performances from not one, not even two, but three swimmers on the same day. The first record to fall by the wayside was the facility record in the Men's 100 Backstroke when senior Kevin Velleca blazed his way to a time of 49.32 seconds and a win in the event. Next up the Women's three-meter school and facility records were smashed by a stellar performance from senior Molly Culberson who posted a score of 357.60 in her six attempts on the day. Last but certainly not least, the Men's 50 Freestyle facility record fell victim to the onslaught of pure speed that is senior Cullen Jones. Jones blazed a leadoff split time of 19.60 seconds in the 200 Freestyle Relay which sparked the relay team on to victory in the event.
Wolfpack Divers Put In A Strong Showing Against Maryland
Not only was senior Molly Culberson blazing her way to pool and school records on the diving boards, her male diving comrades were on a mission to score big for the Wolfpack. The divers definitely came to the pool on fire following their tough weekend in South Carolina where the Pack failed to win all the diving events for the first time since losing one event against Georgia Tech earlier this season. Freshmen Austin Hampton and Alexander Dambly continued to impress as the duo snatched two wins for the Pack against the Terps. Hampton was quite impressive in his one-meter win as he posted a score of 320.78 and brought home the win in the event. His teammate Dambly was extremely impressive as he brought home the win in the three-meter event as he scored 352.39 in six dives with his teammate Hampton close behind in second place.
