RALEIGH, N.C. -
The Wolfpack Men's Swimming and Diving squad (5-1, 4-0) bounced back from their heartbreaking loss against South Carolina with a sound thrashing of conference rival Maryland. The Pack sealed the deal early in the 152-76 victory with first and second place finishes in four of the first five events.
The Pack swam away with the 200 Medley Relay as the "A" Team of Kevin Velleca, Dan Velez, Scott Dettloff, and Peter Ranstead snapped off a time of 1:30.56 beating their Pack teammates Steve Cowling, Rick Scott, Lyle Babcock, and Brian Crowder to the wall by nearly four seconds.
Wolfpack distance swimmers followed up the relay perfomance in style with freshman Cole Yarborough swimming his fastest time of the year in the 1000 Freestyle, 9:40.85, to get the win. He was followed closely by teammates Seth Hoffman, who finished second 9:40.95, and Billy Booth, who finished third in 9:57.68.
In one of the more impressive performances of the day, Cullen Jones swam his first 200 Freestyle of the year and blazed his final 50 yards to get the win in 1:42.86. Jones was over a full second behind going into the last 50 yards and swam past Maryland's Partrick Doyle and finished 37 hundredths of a second ahead of him. Jones backed up his National Collegiate swimmer of the week award with a leadoff split time of 19.60 seconds in the 200 Freestyle relay which was good enough to give him the pool record and spark his team to a win in the event. To top it all off he added a 100 Freestyle win in a time of 45.51 seconds.
The diving team had their usual superb performances handed in from freshmen Austin Hampton and Alexander Dambly. Hampton snatched the one-meter event with a score of 320.78 and his freshman counterpart Dambly took the three-meter with a score of 352.39, a season-team high.
Senior swimmer Velleca picked up a win in the 100 Backstroke as he sped his way to a pool record time of 49.32 seconds. Another Pack senior Dan Velez took the win in the 100 Breaststroke, swimming a time of 56.71 seconds.
