Wolfpack Falls to South Carolina in Return to Action
The Wolfpack Men's and Women's teams both fell to the Gamecocks in Columbia on the team's return to action following the winter holidays. The men dropped a disappointing 121-120 decision as the Gamecocks handed the Pack their first loss of the season. The men went into the final relay race needing to get first and second place to tie the meet at 121 a piece, however South Carolina tied the second place Wolfpack team with a time of 1:23.70, giving both teams 3 points and South Carolina a one point edge on the scoreboard. The women slipped to 3-4 overall on the season as the Gamecocks beat the Pack 135-103.
Third Time is The Charm: Jones Named ACC Top Performer of The Week Again
Cullen Jones is on a roll. The last two times the Pack has jumped in the pool, he has been outstanding, and people are noticing. For the third time this season and second meet in a row for the Pack, Jones has been named the ACC's Top Performer of the Week. Jones was stellar in the Wolfpack's 121-120 loss to South Carolina in Columbia on January 7th as he won both the 50 and 100 Freestyle events. Jones Jones picked up the win in the 50 free in a time of 19.77, good for an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and just 0.03 seconds off an A standard. He out swam South Carolina's Colby Mack in the 100 Free, touching in 45.08 seconds. He has won each of the 50 and 100 Free events that he has competed in this season. Jones not only won the 50 and 100 Free events against South Carolina,he pulled in the win for the Wolfpack relay team in the 200 Free Relay against the Gamecocks, swimming the anchor leg in 19.06 seconds. Jones' fastest official50 Free time, 19.35 seconds against Virginia Tech, ranks him in the top five nationally for the event.
Wolfpack Women's Lindsey Wins Her Third 200 Freestyle Event
Wolfpack Freshman Lucy Lindsey has been impressive in this her first season on the team. The freshman has won three 200 Freestyle events and never placed lower than third in the event. Lindsey won the 200 Free against South Carolina in a time of 1:54.27, edging out teammate Kerry Whitson who finished in 1:54.74. Lindsey also won the event at the Maryland Invite and against Virginia Tech.
Wolfpack Divers put in a strong showing against South Carolina
The Wolfpack diving team had several of their most impressive scores against South Carolina in Columbia, however it wasn't enough to put them over the top. Molly Culberson had her best score of the season on the one-meter board, 308.48, but that score wasn't good enough to continue her string of wins in diving events this year. She came up a little more than three points short of South Carolina's Allison Brennan, giving Culberson her first non-first place finish of the year. The men had similar luck as freshman Alex Dambly posted a season team high in the three-meter at 345.98. He was bested by the Gamecocks David Ovelson who scored 372.18. Dambly's freshman teammate, Austin Hampton, was the only Pack diver to win an event against South Carolina. He posted an ACC high in the one-meter event scoring an impressive 377.60.
