Pope Provisionally Qualifies In Shot Put

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Mitchell Pope provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships with a career best mark of 59-3.5 to win the shot put Saturday at the NC State indoor track & field teams' season opener, the North Carolina Opener. Pope also won the weight throw with career-best mark of 56-10.75 and Chris Crawford was the runner-up with a throw of 52-11.5. Ebony Foster was the runner-up in the 60m hurdles, posting the top collegiate time in the race with a 8.59 and Mattie Bethea cleared 5-6 in the high jump to finish second with the top collegiate mark in the competition.
Brie Ward hit a career best 49-2.25 in the weight throw to finish third and freshman Shanelle Cross came in third place in the long jump with a mark of 17-6.75. Laila Thomas placed fifth in the long jump at 17-4.75. Thomas and Christie Black tied for fifth place in the high jump with a mark of 5-4.25. Tabitha Woodard cleared 11-5.75 in the pole vault to finish in fourth place and Teresa Reed tied for fifth place at 10-11.75. Joya Rodgers and Foster finished seventh and eighth place respectively in the 60m.
Chris Crawford took third place in the shot put with a toss of 46-9 and Dexter Adams reached 23-6.75 in the long jump to tie for third place. Redshirt freshman Kent Dickens came in fourth place in the weight throw with a mark of 46-2.5. Freshman Reggie Reese placed seventh in the 60m with a time of 6.93 and classmate Jamar Dawson finished 10th in the triple jump with a mark of 43-9.25.
The Wolfpack returns to action next weekend when NC State travels to Johnson City, Tenn. to compete in East Tennessee State's NISWONGER Invitational.
