RALEIGH, N.C. - Wolfpack women's tennis will return to the courts this Sunday, Jan. 15, in a spring season-opening showdown against UNC Greensboro. The match, slated to begin at 2 p.m., will be held at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus. This year the Wolfpack returns seven letterwinners from last season's squad, while bringing three new players into the fold.
Seniors Barbara Orlay and Nandita Chandrasekar will look to lead the Pack in their final season with the program. Orlay, who collected All-ACC honors in 2004, played at the No. 1 spot throughout all of last season, finishing second on the team in wins with 12. Chandrasekar returns to spring play after sitting out last season with an injury.
Sophomore Julia Roach will try and replicate the success of a sensational freshman season one year ago, in which the Raleigh, N.C., native led the team in wins with 13 and was named team MVP.
NC State will take on 11 teams that were ranked at the end of last spring by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The list of top-flight competitors includes No. 6 Georgia Tech, No. 10 Clemson, No. 11 North Carolina, No. 13 Miami, No. 17 Duke, No. 26 Wake Forest, No. 32 Florida International, No. 41 Maryland, No. 43 Florida State, No. 47 San Diego State and No. 67 Marshall.
After battling on the tournament circuit throughout a successful fall season, the Pack will host 13 matches this spring, including UNC Greensboro, Gardner-Webb, Western Carolina, UNC-Wilmington, East Carolina, Elon, Marshall, Wake Forest, Princeton, Florida State, Miami, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
In 10 road treks, NC State will make its way to Florida Atlantic, Florida International, North Carolina, Duke, Penn State (@ San Diego State), San Diego State, Maryland, Boston College, Clemson and Georgia Tech.
The ACC Championships will be held in Cary, N.C., Thursday, Apr. 20 through Sunday, Apr. 23.
