Clemson, S.C. - The 16th ranked men's soccer team shutout its second straight ACC opponent, and picked up a 2-0 road win at No. 22 Clemson Friday night. Seniors John Queeley and Aaron King both scored first-half goals for the Pack (7-3-1, 2-1-1 ACC), and the NC State defense held that lead in the second half to blank the Tigers (4-3-1, 0-3 ACC). The win was the fourth straight for the Pack, and improves NC State's record to 3-2-1 against ranked opponents this season.
Queeley got the Pack on the scoreboard first in the 28th minute of action. The play started with sophomore Hugh Cronin taking a free kick right at midfield. Cronin's kick found senior Bryant Salter at the left corner of the 18-yard box, and Salter sent a pass to the opposite post to King. King controlled and was about to shoot, but a Clemson defender poked it away, but not outside the six-yard box. Queeley was there to pick up the free ball, and he netted his second goal of the season at the 27:00 mark.
NC State would add its second goal of the half in the 35th minute. Salter started the play when he raced in front of a Clemson defender and stole a pass. Salter found junior Santiago Fusilier who then crossed the ball into the box. Fusilier's pass missed the head of sophomore El Hadj Cisse, but King was on the back post to net the goal at the 34:25 mark for the 11th time this season.
The Pack nearly added another goal right before the half, as Queeley's free kick from just 18-yards out hit the Clemson post and bounced away.
NC State went into the half with a 2-0 lead, the first game this season the Pack has scored two goals in the first half. NC State also outshot the Tigers in the first 45 minutes 9-8.
The second half was a defensive battle, as the Pack withheld its lead and earned the second straight shutout in ACC play. NC State's Jorge Gonzalez earned the shutout in the Wolfpack net with his five saves.
The win was the Pack's first at Clemson since 1994, and only the sixth win in 23 trips to Clemson for NC State. The win was also the first road ACC win for NC State since 1997.
King came into the game leading the NCAA in goals scored, and added to that total with his 11th goal in the first 11 games of the season, scoring in every game except the loss at No. 4 Virginia. He has already tied his season-high mark for goals in a season, he had 11 in both his sophomore and junior seasons. King also moved into seventh in the NC State record books with his 40th career goal.
NC State will have a bit of a rest now, as the Pack will next be in action next weekend. New ACC foe Boston College comes to town next Saturday night for a 7:00 p.m. contest at SAS Soccer Park.
