TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - NC State women's soccer fell 3-1 at No. 7 Florida State on Sunday, Sept. 25. The loss dropped the Pack to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference competition, while Florida State improved to 8-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. NC State freshman Lindsay Vera posted the game's first goal and only for the Wolfpack at the 1:33 mark. Senior goalkeeper Kim Selz collected four saves and allowed three goals. For Florida State, sophomore Sel Kuralay posted her league-best 10th goal on the year for the game-winner at 62:57. The Wolfpack heads home for one game this week, a Sunday, Oct. 2, match against No. 7 Duke at 1 p.m. at the SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
The Pack had just one shot in the first half, but it was a good one. Freshman Lindsay Vera timed a well-placed pass from senior Lydia McBath just past the midline and dribbled down the field to meet Florida State's keeper, Ali Mims in the second minute (1:33). Vera calmly drew Mims out and tucked the ball through her legs into the bottom of the goal. It was Vera's third goal for the year and McBath's first assist and also marked the quickest goal for NC State in 11 matches. The Pack was on top 1-0 until the 13th minute when Mami Yamaguchi scored the tying goal from the left side. Junior Wolfpack defender Nicole Mayo made the initial stop on Viola Odebrecht, but Yamaguchi was there to corrall the loose ball and fire it in by NC State senior Kim Selz. Selz made three saves in the half however, including a brilliant punch out in the 31st minute. Florida State's Holly Peltzer struck from the right side, but Selz was there to make the save as her fist reacted to punch the ball into the cross bar. FSU finished with a lead in shots after 45 minutes, 7-to-1 and had a 5-to-0 corner kick lead.
The Pack came out of the break looking to score. Sophomore Jessica O'Rourke wanted to put NC State ahead, but her shot from 22 yards out center sailed wide two minutes into the half. Florida State earned the go ahead goal in the 63rd minute. Sophomore Sel Kuralay netted her league-best 10th goal after a short pass heading right to left from India Trotter down the sideline. She led the game with seven shots, two on goal. The ball was well-placed into the upper center from about 15 yards. After O'Rourke's early shot, the Pack had difficulty retaining possession and in the meantime gave up 11 shots in the half, including the go ahead goal. Florida State put through the insurance goal in the 78th minute on a goal by Trotter from the left side. The Pack worked in the 82nd minute for a chance to close the gap. Vera took the ball down the right sideline and sent a cross in to Tognetti waiting for a header inside the box, but she was shoved off by a Florida State defender and the play was diffused. Selz saw seven shots on goal, including three in the second half, and made four saves for the game.
The Wolfpack will have just one ACC contest this week, a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Oct. 2, versus No. 7 Duke.
