CARY, N.C. - NC State fell 1-0 to visiting No. 8 Duke on Sunday, Oct. 2. The Wolfpack now stands at 5-6-0 overall and 1-2-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference action, while Duke improves to 8-2-1 and 1-2-0. Duke won the shot battle and scored the game's only goal at the 3:39 mark. Kate Seibert posted her second goal of the season after a Darby Kroyer assist from the midline. Allison Lipsher of Duke recorded the shutout after two saves, while NC State's Kim Selz took the loss despite solid play in the net. The Wilmington, N.C. native had five saves on six shots faced. The Wolfpack will travel to No. 12 Wake Forest on Thursday, Oct. 6.
"It's really disappointing to lose a game with a 1-0 score and we did it to ourselves," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We just had too many mistakes that cost us scoring opportunities. We worked a lot better together in the second half to create some chances and had some solid shots, but just did not get into the back of the net."
NC State held Duke to one goal after the Blue Devils wracked up four shots on net in the first half. Duke's Kate Seibert recorded the goal in the fourth minute after Darby Kroyer sent a pass in from the midline. Seibert worked right to left and squared up a shot from the left side into the right side of the net. The Wolfpack had two shots in the half but none were contested. Freshman Kasie Shover sent a header just over the bar in the 38th minute on a cross from junior Megan Buescher. Buescher had just taken a throw-in on the near side and retrieved a rebounded ball to set up the play for Shover. NC State's senior keeper, Kim Selz, played a solid first half, recording several interceptions and break ups. She posted a diving save to her right side after Duke's Kroyer took a quick chip shot on the left side. On the next play she made a third save after a Blue Devil header by Heidi Hollenbeck. Overall Duke led in shots taken 8-to-2 and in corner kicks, 5-to-1.
The Wolfpack faired better in the second half, posting four shots, including two shots on goal. Freshman Lindsay Vera connected on the first shot on goal just under a minute after kick-off of the period. She made a play from the left side, but Duke's keeper, Allison Lipsher was there for the stop near the center of the net. Freshman Ashleah Dingle had NC State's best opportunity at a score in the 78th minute and again in the 80th minute. She took on three Duke defenders and struck from the right side just inside the 18-yard box. The sharp shot just missed the top of the goal and went out of bounds. Her second shot on goal was another solid ball that went high. With just under two minutes remaining Duke tried one final attempt to record a second goal, but as Sarah McCabe sliced one towards the net, the Wolfpack's Kim Selz was there to make a diving save to the left side. Selz has 38 saves on the season and has allowed just seven goals in 11 games.
NC State travels to No.12 Wake Forest on Thursday, Oct. 6, for a 7 p.m. showdown in Winston-Salem.
