MIAMI, Fla. - NC State women's soccer collected its second-straight win at Miami in the Pack's Atlantic Coast Conference opener in Miami, Fla. Thursday, Sept. 22. Junior Carol Tognetti scored the "Golden Goal" in the 105th minute of double overtime after a corner kick by freshman Lindsay Vera from the right side. The win also ended a four-match losing streak and improved the Wolfpack's record to 5-4-0 and 1-0 in the ACC. Senior goalkeeper Kim Selz posted three saves in the match, including two in the overtime periods. Miami dropped to 5-4-1 and 0-1 in the ACC. The Pack travels to face No. 7 Florida State in Tallahassee on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on Sun Sports in Florida. The network is available using satellite or with sports package with Time Warner Cable in the Raleigh area.
The Wolfpack came out with a purpose on Friday night against the Hurricanes. Both sides of the ball were working hard to put pressure on the host Miami. NC State had tallied three shots in the first several minutes, matching the three by the Hurricanes in the first 10. Two of those shots by the Wolfpack were placed on frame, including a header from junior Megan Buescher in the 13th minute that was saved by Miami's Kristen Chapman on the goal line near the left side. Buescher had a second shot on goal but it was saved by the Canes' goalkeeper Lauren McAdams 15 minutes later. Freshman midfielder Lindsay Vera made her return to the starting lineup after missing two games due to an ankle injury. She quickly offered her offensive presence by posting four shots, one of which nearly touched net. Senior Lydia McBath sent a pass in the right midline side to Vera who was racing in between two Miami defenders. The Houston, Texas native moved right to left and struck, but the ball just missed the lower right corner as McAdams came out to cut her off. She finished with four shots in the half. The Pack's defense held Miami to just four shots, including just one in the final 35 minutes.
What was once a fast-paced battle between the ACC foes, quickly turned to a muddy brawl. A heavy rain covered the Miami area and quickly pushed both teams up against a wall in the second half. With the ball not moving fast on the turf, both squads were forced to use long balls to advance up field. Despite such adversity, both teams recorded six shots, one each on goal. Senior Lydia McBath recorded the Pack's lone shot on goal in the 50th minute. Miami's Bryn Heinicke, who had two shots in the half, tallied the Hurricanes' shot on goal, but Selz was there to make the save. McBath had three shots in the half to lead the Pack and Tognetti had two. The drenched play forced the game into overtime.
The overtime was relieved of the rain, which in turn allowed the teams to play the ball at a more steady pace. Although both teams had one shot on goal to try and put it away before entering the second overtime. Miami's Val Blanco posted the lone shot on goal, which was caught by Selz in the muddy box, while NC State's, freshman Kasie Shover, recorded SOG in the 96th minute.
The Pack, which had retained momentum throughout the majority of the match, nearly saw its hard work come to an end after a foul forced a free kick on the left side. Heinicke bent a ball into the box and Selz was there for the save, her third of the game. NC State had other plans in mind and returned the scoring drive with one of its own. Freshman Tami Krzeszewski fired a shot from the left side on the ensuing possession. Miami's McAdams was there to make the save on the right side, but dove out of bounds after the catch. The Pack was then rewarded a corner kick. The scoring duo of Vera and junior Carol Tognetti connected once again in overtime. The tandom had achieved the same success in the overtime win against Liberty. Vera sent in a corner from the right side to the foot of Tognetti in the box, who then shot it into the bottom right corner. That ball was saved by a Miami player, but Tognetti was there to collect her own rebound and score the "Golden Goal". It was her third game-winner this season.
For the match, NC State led 18-12 in shots and held Miami without a corner kick, while it had seven. Vera finished with five shots, while Tognetti added four and McBath three. Selz had three saves, one in each of the final three periods.
NC State travels to No. 7 Florida State for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 25 (Televised on Sun Sports). The Pack returns home on Sunday, Oct. 2 to host nationally ranked Duke at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
