PHILADELPHIA -- NC State women's soccer fell 1-0 at Penn Sunday, Sept. 18. The Wolfpack's records now sits even at 4-4 at the conclusion of non-conference play. Penn improved to 3-1-1. The Quakers' Rachel Fletcher recorded the winning goal in the 57th minute. NC State senior goalkeeper Kim Selz faced nine shots on goal and made eight saves for the afternoon. The Pack now turns its focus towards Atlantic Coast Conference action with two road games beginning at Miami on Thursday, Sept. 22.
The Quakers put on the attack early, forcing the Wolfpack's Selz and the NC State defense to make some big saves in the first half. The senior from Wilmington, N.C. made six saves in the first 45 minutes and in doing so kept NC State in the match. Offensively, NC State tallied just two shots, one on goal in the first half. And only junior Megan Buescher and freshman Ashleah Dingle recorded a shot on goal for the match. Penn's Jessica Keeley made the save both times, one in each half.
The second half was much the same, but this time one of the Quakers' three shots on goal in the half landed in the back of the net. In the 57th minute, Penn's Rachel Fletcher finished off a combination from the left side with a goal from directly in front. The play was set up by a cross from the Quakers' Nicky White from the left side. The cross was followed by a one-touch from Jennifer Price at the far post to the feet of the onrushing Fletcher, who buried it past a Selz, who dove to make the attempt at a save. The Pack recorded three shots in the second half, one on frame, but it was stopped once again by Penn's Keeley. For the match, NC State was outshot 15-5.
NC State travels to Miami on Thursday, Sept. 22 to take on the Hurricanes in the ACC opener. The Pack then moves north to face Florida State on Sunday, Sept. 25.
