Women's Soccer Falls Short at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - NC State women's soccer fell 2-0 at Lehigh Friday, Sept. 16. The Wolfpack stands at 4-3 heading into Sunday's match at Penn, starting at 1 p.m. Lehigh improved to 6-0-1 on the year. The Mountain used an early goal and tight defense to pick up the victory. Lehigh's Jennifer Fetsick scored with winning goal in the second minute and Gina Lewandowski tallied the insurance goal in the 23rd minute.
Lehigh jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on the strength of a Jen Fetsick goal, unassisted, just 1:49 into the game off of a broken play in front of the goal. The Mountain Hawks then added to their lead when junior Gina Lewandowski scored her fourth goal of the season on a beautiful cross pass from Melissa Montalvo to put the home team in front 2-0. Lehigh then held on to that tw- goal advantage and took it into halftime. NC State was outshot 8-to-0 in the first half.
"We played horribly in the first half and didn't wake up until the second half," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "In the second half we outpossessed them but it was too little too late."
The second half did not feature as much offense at first, but each team did have opportunities to score, with neither cashing in. The Mountain Hawks had several shots from near the 18-yard line, but NC State goalkeeper, senior Kim Selz, who entered the game after half time, made a three leaping saves as Lehigh pressed to scored. NC State recorded two shots in the second half. Junior Carol Tognetti and freshman Kasie Shover each placed a shot on goal, but Lehigh's keeper, freshman Julie Kafka made the stop both times.
Lehigh had 13 shots for the game to NC State's two, while the Brown and White registered four corners and the Wolfpack had three.
NC State will travel to Philadelphia to face Penn at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18.
