CARY, N.C. - NC State women's soccer fell to visiting Oregon 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 11. The loss dropped the Wolfpack's record to 4-2 on the year, while the Ducks improved to 5-1-1. Oregon's Nicole Garbin tallied the lone goal in the 32nd minute. NC State's junior goalkeeper Megan Connors finished with four saves and one goal allowed in her first loss of the year. Oregon's netminder, Jessie Chatfield, collected one save. NC State will travel to Lehigh and Penn on Friday, Sept. 16 and Sunday, Sept. 18.
Both NC State and Oregon had a tough time getting their offenses started. The two teams traded shots right from the start, but faded a bit as the defenses took over for awhile. It wasn't until the 32nd minute that the Ducks put one away and took a 1-0 lead. Oregon used a throw-in to create a scoring opportunity from the left side. Andrea Valadez took the throw-in and worked her way in to create a shot of her own. NC State's keeper, Megan Connors, came out to cut off the angle and make the save, but the ball bounced back into play and hit the feet of Oregon's Nicole Garbin. Garbin then struck at the net and used the open net to score the game's lone goal heading into half time. The Ducks had six total shots, including three on goal, while NC State had four, just one on goal, a chip shot by junior Mandela Schumacher-Hodge that was intercepted by Oregon's keeper Jessie Chatfield in the 37th minute. Other than Valadez, Garbin and Sarah Yoro each had a shot on goal. Chatfield had one save in the half and Connors finished with two.
"I was disappointed in how we played today," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We did not play simple soccer and did't move the ball well from the second third to the last third of the field. We should have scored some goals, but played it right into their defense."
NC State held the shot edge in the second half, 7-to-4 but still did not finish one to even the score. The Pack struggled to finish in the final third. NC State did have a nice chance in the 59th minute on a combination play between sophomore Jessica O'Rourke and senior Lydia McBath. O'Rourke sent a cross into McBath who was darting in from the right side, but her shot was too strong and drifted by the left post. Oregon's Allison Newton had the Ducks' only shot on goal in the second half, but it was stopped by Connors.
Overall, NC State led in shots, 11-to-10 and in shots on goal, but the Ducks had five shots on goal to the Wolfpack's one. The Pack also gave up five corners and earned just two, one in each half.
The Wolfpack now heads out on the road bringing an end to its five-match homestand. NC State will travel to Lehigh for a 7p.m. match on Friday, Sept. 16, and to Penn on Sunday, Sept. 18, for a 1 p.m. start.
