CARY, N.C. - Freshman Lindsay Vera netted the "Golden Goal" for the NC State in the 102nd minute of the double overtime match versus visiting College of Charleston, Sunday, Aug. 28. The Wolfpack, now 2-0 on the season picked up the home opener victory in the second overtime period at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. And for the second-straight match, NC State shutout its opponent, both credited to senior goalkeeper Kim Selz. College of Charleston dropped its season opener and is now 0-1 for the year. NC State will host the Summitt Hospitality Invite at SAS Soccer Park, Sept. 2-4.
Once again the Wolfpack defense was stingy, allowing just seven shots by its opponents. The foursome, anchored by junior co-captain Michelle Crocker and juniors Nicole Mayo, Megan Buescher and Karla Hutton, along with keeper Kim Selz, kept the Cougars from having many scoring opportunities.
"It was a hard-fought match on both sides of the ball, but I really feel that it was our defense that was the unsung hero today," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "It was a very physical match from the start. Lindsay (Vera) came through for us again and we were able to come away with our first home victory."
NC State's offense dominated the Cougars' defensive line as it tallied 23 shots, while College of Charleston was held to seven and did not get a shot off in the final overtime period. By the end of the first half NC State had already tallied five shots on goal, but all were stopped by the Courgars' Erin Smith. She finished the game with nine saves, including one solid shot taken by NC State's junior Mandela Schumacher-Hodge early in the first overtime period. Smith reached to her right side to stop a shot aimed for the upper 90 that would have given NC State the win. NC State's Selz recorded five saves on the game, which also included an outstretched save to her left side after a shot from Katie Brown just inside the left corner. But it was the final shot of the game by freshman Lindsay Vera that closed the book on a match that lasted just over 101 minutes. With a little help from junior Carol Tognetti who chased a ball down the right side, Vera was able to quickly turn and fire the game-winner into mid-net on the left side. The goal was her second-straight and second of her career in just two matches.
All told, Tognetti led the Wolfpack with three shots on goal. Junior Jessica O'Rourke added two SOG, as did Vera. Freshman Ashleah Dingle and junior Nicole Mayo also had a shot land on frame. The Cougars were led by Katie Brown with two shots on goal. Colleen Hoab, Danielle Jordan and Lou Hudson also tallied a SOG.
NC State will face Liberty on Friday, Sept. 2, at 7:30 p.m. and will follow with a Sunday match against Delaware at 2:30 p.m. as part of the Summitt Hospitality Invite. Elon is also participating.
