Dexter Adams, a rising sophomore on the NC State men's track & field teams sat down with GoPack.com recently for a quick chat. Adams, a long jumper from Greensboro, N.C., regionally qualified in the outdoor long jump last season and took fourth place at the ACC Indoor Championships.
GoPack: So what have you been up to this summer?
DA: It's been pretty laid back. I did a little summer school and then went home to Greensboro.
GoPack: Have you been working out much?
DA: I've been lifting weights and doing a little running, but mostly just resting.
GoPack: What's in store for you this season?
DA: I'm really looking forward to this season. I didn't really get my technique down until that last meet before regionals last year and then at the regional meet I drug my foot getting up from my best jump and had about ten inches taken off my mark. I'm also going to try to help out in some more running events this year, maybe a relay if they need me and I would like to try triple jump.
GoPack: Did you change your long jump technique?
DA: In high school I used the hang technique, which is kind of a glide. I got about as good as I could get with that and was hitting 24-7. When I got here I switched to the hitch technique, which keeps the running motion in the air, therefore keeping momentum going further. While I haven't reached 24-7 with the hitch yet, I should end up jumping much further as I get better at it. That technique is best suited for my skills since I don't have the highest vertical or the fastest speed around.
GoPack: When do preseason workouts begin and what are you planning to do differently this year?
DA: We start up in early September and we'll be doing a lot of endurance running. Last year I missed about three or four weeks of preseason with an achilles tendon injury, so just going through that much more training this year should be a huge help. I'm also planning to work harder in the weight room this season.
GoPack: Have you kept in touch with any of your teammates this summer?
DA: Mainly just the jump crew - Michael Hill, Mattie Bethea, Tabitha Woodard and Laila Thomas. Everybody is really optimistic about this season. Our group did pretty well last season and it will be interesting to see how the new guys fit in.
GoPack: What classes are you taking this semester?
DA: Introduction to Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Introduction to Sports Management, Biology and Micro Economics.
