Three Wolfpack Women's Golfers Advance At North-South

PINEHURST, N.C. - Six members of the NC State women's golf team are competing this week in the North and South Women's Amateur Championship. Rising seniors Lorraine Ballerano, Molly Birmingham and rising junior Nancy Mountcastle are still alive and tee off Thursday in the round of 32 at Pinehurst No. 2.
Birmingham, the 31-seed in match play, defeated No. 34 Jessica Lovell 6&5 in the first round Wednesday and plays No. 2 Alison Walshe in the round of 32 Thursday. Ballerano, the 48-seed, beat No. 17 Laura Crawford 4&3 in the first round and will take on No. 49 Laura Mengelkamp in the round of 32. Mountcastle, the 61-seed, took out No. 4 Stacy Lewis 2up in the first round and is slated to meet Meghan Bolger in the second round.
Lauren Harling, a rising sophomore for the Pack, was the 15-seed in match play and lost 2&1 in the first round to Laur McCaslin. Harling led the NC State contingent in the two rounds of stroke play. She shot a 74 at Pinehurst No. 8 in the first round and carded a 75 in the second round played at Pinehurst No. 2 to tie for 11th place. Birmingham went 78-74 in stroke play to tie for 26th place, Ballerano shot 78-76 to tie for 39th and Mountcastle fired 75-81 to tie for 58th.
Jessica Vincent, a rising sophomore for the Wolfpack and Lauren Doughtie, an incoming freshman, both competed in the two rounds of stroke play, but missed the 64-person for match play.
