MONROE, N.C. - Stephen Lewton, a rising senior on the NC State men's golf team, followed a first round 68 on Monday with a 72 on Tuesday to tie for 13th place in a sectional qualifying tournament for the U.S. Amateur. Lewton missed the cut by just three strokes in a field of 115 players vying for a top six finish at Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe, N.C., because the top four qualify, plus two alternates, for the U.S. Amateur.
Lewton is riding high after an outstanding summer of golf. The Englishman from Milton Keyes went home for the summer after an up and down junior season with the Wolfpack in which he played through nagging injuries and illness. Lewton finished third on the squad with a 75.6 stroke average and led the team at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate with a three-over score, tying for sixth place.
This summer Lewton played in five major amateur tournaments in England against international competition and performed very well. He shot 73-70-68-73 on the Old Course at St. Andrews to finish sixth out of 160 players at the St. Andrews Links Trophy. Lewton then recorded back-to-back 10th place finishes at the Welsh Open Amateur and the Scottish Open Amateur. He fired 71-68-67-72 at the Welsh, which was played at Royal St. David's and he then carded scores of 71-75-72-72 at the Scottish, which was played at Royal Aberdeen.
Going against over 280 participants at the British Amateur, Lewton shot 73-69 to finish seventh in stroke play and qualified for match play, where he made it to the round of 32 at Royal Birkdale. Then, Lewton won the Southeast Regional, a two-round tournament at Stoke Park, with a pair of 68s.
