Dan Velez has made an immediate impact since hitting the pool for NC State in January of 2005, and he continues to do so on an international stage leading into his senior year. Velez finished the 2005 Maccabiah Games, held in Israel, with two gold medals and a bronze to his name in helping set two records at the Games. He wrapped up the competition with one of the top performances of the event, winning gold in the 100 meter breaststroke with a record 1:03.76, a few days after winning the bronze in the 200 m breaststroke. Velez was also a key factor in the 400 medley relay, swimming the breaststroke leg as the USA team won gold while setting another Maccabiah Games record. The relay time of 3:45.47 was posted by Josh Hafkin, Velez, Dan Madwed and Bryan Goldberg.
Velez will return home to prepare for his senior season with NC State, where he helped set an ACC record in the 400 medley relay and earned a trip to the NCAA Championship as well as a fourth place finish at the ACC Championships in the 100 breast, swimming a 55.15, the second fastest time in school history.
