ROCK HILL, S.C. (www.tarheeltour.com) - Former NC State All-American Chris Mundorf led wire to wire to take home the $9,000 first-place prize in the Tarheel Tour's Rock Hill Invitational at Rock Hill Country Club.
Mundorf shot 69 in Thursday's final round to finish the three-day event 14 shots under par at 202. It was the first professional victory for the 2001 Wolfpack graduate who turned pro in 2002.
"I've been waiting for it for a long time," said Mundorf, who posted a course-record 62 in the first round. "I've had my chances, so it feels good to hold the lead all the way through the tournament."
Mundorf strung together nine straight pars on the front nine before making three birdies on the back nine on Nos. 10, 13 and 16. As it turned out, he needed those birdies to hold off a charge from Braxton Wynns of Buies Creek.
Mundorf's college teammate and fellow All-American David Sanchez closed with a 71 to share third place at 206, earning $2,750.
Former Wolfpack golfers Jason Moon and Fernando Mechereffe were also at the event. Moon carded a third round 67 en route to a six-under finish, earning $950, while Mechereffe fired four-under to win $680.50.
