RALEIGH, N.C. - Building off of the momentum from the best team finish in well over a decade, as well as the opening of the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center, Wolfpack men's tennis head coach Jon Choboy continued to move his NC State tennis program into the national picture by picking up two blue chip junior standouts during the recent signing period. Both of those recruits, Jay Weineker of Mountain Brook, Ala., and Christian Welte of Moylan, Pa., have been competing at a high level since committing to the Red and White.
Weineker recently won the Spring Southern Closed Championships in Mobile, Ala. Serving as the top player in the South, Weineker collected every set he played on his way to the championship title. Before making his way to Raleigh, Weineker will spend the remainder of the summer taking part in all of the United States Tennis Association's (USTA) Junior National events. During the summer of 2004, Weineker won four rounds at the U.S. National Hard Court Championships.
Welte has looked equally impressive since committing to the Wolfpack, earning his first professional points in doubles play on the USTA Pro Circuit. Ranked No. 1 in the Middle States region, Welte has been taking part in the Orange Park, Fla. futures event. Over the past several months he competed in multiple futures events all over the United States. In 2003, Welte won the United States Clay Court Doubles Championship.
NC State finished the season with a 15-12 record, going 2-8 in ACC competition. The squad's 15 wins were the most since 1988 for a Wolfpack tennis team. With a solid returning cast, and a nationally-recognized incoming duo, the Red and White will look to continue catapulting up the national scene throughout next season. Only one member of this past season's roster, senior Conor Taylor, will not be returning to the fold.
