RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State men's tennis, currently ranked No. 46 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), will travel to Coral Gables, Fla. to face the Hurricanes of the University of Miami on Friday, Apr. 8. The match is the eighth conference matchup for NC State, as the Wolfpack (15-7) will look to win its third ACC dual match. The Hurricanes (10-8, 1-6 ACC) are not currently ranked by the ITA, though they have two singles players and one doubles tandem in the national rankings. NC State is led by William Noblitt (15-3 singles record), and Nick Cavaday (13-5) and will attempt to claim the doubles point for the 12th time this season.
After dispatching six of the first eight ranked opponents to start the season, including No. 30 Florida State in conference, the Wolfpack has dropped its last five against ranked foes. NC State will look to snap a three-match skid overall, after three conference losses to then No. 53 North Carolina, No. 3 Virginia and No. 61 Virginia Tech. The Hurricanes have two players ranked nationally in Tim Krebs (No. 95) and Josh Cohen (No. 120), and a doubles tandem ranked No. 58 in Krebs and Vivek Subramanian.
Noblitt leads the team in singles wins and overall season victories, as he has posted a combined singles and doubles record in the fall and spring of 41-15. He won his first ten matches of the spring before losing, then reeled off five straight wins to improve to 15-1. His three losses have come at the No. 5 singles position against No. 3 Virginia and No. 61 Virginia Tech, and he also lost at six singles to No. 6 Duke.
Cavaday has been impressive as well, going 13-5 thus far in the spring at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as a freshman. Against No. 3 Virginia, Cavaday took the No. 8 player in the nation, Doug Stewart, to three sets after Cavaday blitzed Stewart with a 6-0 first set before the Cavalier junior prevailed.
Andre Iriarte has played 2-5 in the lineup, with five of his 11 wins coming at No. 3 singles. Will Shaw has been consistent all year, and his 10 wins are tied for fourth on the team with teammate Mason Schermerhorn. Val Banada (seven wins) and Conor Taylor (six victories) will also factor into the starting lineup against the Hurricanes.
NC State will return home to the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on Tuesday, Apr. 12 for the final home match of the season against Old Dominion. The match, slated for a 2 p.m. start, is lone senior Conor Taylor's final home match in the Red and White.
