Pope Wins Shot Put With Qualifying Mark

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The NC State track & field teams were in action Saturday at the Charlotte Invitational. Mitchell Pope won the shot put with a NCAA Regional Championship qualifying mark of 57-9.
Pope also finished 10th in the hammer throw. Dexter Adams placed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 22-11 3/4. Michael Hill took sixth place in the triple jump, reaching 45-8 and Phillip Stafford took ninth in the 1,500m. James Garzoni finished sixth in the pole vault. John Henderson was the third place finisher in the 2,000m steeplechase with a time of 6:04.58.
On the women's side, Laila Thomas and Mattie Bethea competed in five events, as preperation for future pentathlons. Bethea cleared 5-3 in the high jump to tie for second place. Joya Rodgers came in fifth place in the 100m sprint. Kelly Smoke placed eighth in the discus throw, reaching 149-6. Brie Ward came in 12th place and both Ward and Smoke also competed in the hammer throw.
