Pack Pounds Coastal Carolina, 9-1, for DH Sweep

RALEIGH, N.C. - Led by Jen Chamberlin's 10th home run of the season and five strong inning by pitcher Brooke Isley (5-2), NC State completed a sweep of Coastal Carolina (19-20) with a 9-1 win in game two. The Wolfpack (36-22) won game one, 4-2. Shanna Smith collected two hits and two RBIs in game two, while Reneé LaCroix continued to swing a hot bat collecting two hits in a 5-for-6 performance in the twin bill.
Jen Chamberlin hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to give NC State a 3-0 lead, as NC State used four hits in the inning to jump on Coastal Carolina pitcher Brittany Nelson (12-6). Shanna Smith reached on a fielder's choice and stole second, and Miranda Ervin singled before Chamberlin hit the 1-0 pitch over the right centerfield wall. Pinch runner Beth Poore came on to run for Ervin before the home run and scored on the play.
The Chanticleers put runners on second and third with one out after two singles to start the third inning. Allison Cantrell singled to second base to score pinch runner Irene Finley from third to make it 3-1 in favor of NC State. Isley struck out Meagen Johnson before Ashley Gerdts grounded out to end the inning with no further damage.
NC State answered in the bottom half of the inning, plating two runs on two hits and a sacrifice fly. Shanna Smith singled up the middle after working the count full to start the third and then stole second base. Miranda Ervin flied out to deep right field to move Smith to third and Chamberlin drew a walk. Chamberlin then stole second before Shaina Ervin hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Smith, with Chamberlin moving to third on the play. Reneé LaCroix singled up the middle on the next pitch to score Chamberlin and give NC State the 5-1 advantage.
Two more runs pushed the Wolfpack lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth after Blair Harkey and Heather Gelbard singled to get things started. With runners on second and third after Gelbard stole second, Smith hit a RBI groundout to score Harkey and move Gelbard to third. Miranda Ervin reached on an error to score Gelbard with two outs for a 7-1 lead.
Blair Harkey reached on an error on a suicide squeeze, as LaCroix scored after leading off the inning with a single, her fifth hit of the doubleheader. Smith singled up the middle to drive in the ninth run, as the game ended early because of the eight-run rule.
