
Virginia Knocks Off Wolfpack Women's Tennis, 6-1

Charlottesville, Va. - The NC State women's tennis team closed out its regular season on Sunday, Apr. 17, with a loss to the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Va., 6-1. Junior Barbara Orlay collected the Pack's lone singles win of the day at No. 1, while senior Danielle Stadelmann and sophomore Agustina Arechavaleta picked up a decision in doubles play. The Cavaliers improve to 6-14 (2-8 ACC) with the win, while the Wolfpack fall to 9-13 (1-9 ACC) on the season.
Beginning the day in doubles action, No. 72 UVa picked up the first two closely contested matches to earn the duals point and enter singles play with an early 1-0 lead on No. 64 NC State. In the first tag-team bout, Rachel DelPriore and Douglas Wink downed Orlay and freshman Julia Roach in a back-and-forth battle, 8-5. Lori Stern and Kristen James then defeated junior Virginia Romero and freshman Elin Stahl Johansson, 8-4. In the third and final doubles match, NC State picked up a win as Arechavaleta and Stadelmann knocked off Lindsey Pereira and Caroline Hammond, 8-4.
The Wolfpack got off to a hot start in singles play, as Orlay took down Wink in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6. Virginia would then sweep the next five matches to defeat NC State. At No. 2, James trumped Romero, 6-4, 6-1, before DelPriore beat Johansson, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3. In the fourth spot, Roach fell to Stern, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 5 Pereira bested Stadelmann, 7-5, 6-3. In the sixth and final match, Hammond ousted Arechavaleta, 6-2, 6-4.
The NC State women's tennis team will resume action next week at the ACC Championships. The annual event is being held at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C., and will take place Apr. 21-24.
