Six Qualify For NCAA Regional Championships At Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. - The NC State track & field teams had a productive weekend, as the Wolfpack split up over three different meets and qualified six student-athletes for NCAA regionals. Andy Smith posted a 3:47.58 in the men's 1,500m to qualify for regionals while Julia Lucas and Magin Kebert both made qualifying times in the women's 1500m. Eric Hoverstad cleared 16-6 3/4 in the pole vault at the Texas Relays to qualify while Kristina Roth won the steeplechase with a time of regional qualifying time of 10:34.26 and Angelina Blackmon beat the NCAA regional qualifying time in the 800m at the Duke Invitational.
Dexter Adams and Michael Hill accompanied Hoverstad to Austin, Texas to compete in the Texas Relays. Hill placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 48-10 and Adams competed in the long jump. Meanwhile another part of the squad went to Greensboro, N.C., to compete in North Carolina A&T's Murray Nelson Invitational.
At Duke Mitchell Pope took third in the shot put with a mark of 51-9 3/4. He and fellow Wolfpack thrower Chris Crawford had top 10 finishes in the men's hammer throw and both placed in the top 20 of the discus throw. Chris Kollar ran a 1:56.64 in the 800m and finished seventh in the 1500m with a 3:48.98. Wesley Smith competed in the 1,500m as well. John Crews finished 13th in the 3000m with a time of 8:29.64, John Henderson placed fourth in the steeplechase with a time of 9:16.10 and James Garzoni cleared 14-4 in the pole vault for 10th place. Patrick Chessar posted a 14:49.34 in the 5000m. Omar Wells led four NC State sprinters in the 200m at North Carolina A&T, placing 15th with a 21.82, ahead of Matt Minnick, LT Dickens and Armand Quenum.
On the women's side, Blackmon nabbed sixth place in the 800m with a NCAA regional qualifying time of 2:09.58 and nearly qualified in the 1500m as well with a 4:29.32. Lucas took fifth in the 1,500m with a regional qualifying time of 4:22.11 and Kebert finished ninth with a regional qualifying time of 4:24.46. Jessie Yester, Georgia Davis, Michelle Popple and Kelly Brown also ran the 1500m for NC State.
Kelly Smoke and fellow thrower Brie Ward competed in two different events at Duke. Smoke reached 161-3 in the hammer throw for ninth place and finished fourth in the discus throw with a mark of 146-9. Ginger Wheeler captured eighth place in the 5,000m with a time of 16:56.60, nearly qualifying for NCAA regionals and Josianne Lauber came in 13th with a 17:15.00. Erin Swain and Sara Powell both competed in the 5,000m as well. Kebert was the runner-up in the 3,000m with a time of 9:35.26 and Jennifer Boyd also ran the 3k. Cassandra Williams sprinted in both the 100m and the 200m for NC State too.
