Miami Defeats NC State Baseball, 13-7

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Jon Jay had four hits and drove in four runs, and No. 6 Miami got two big innings early in the game to defeat NC State in an error-marred slugfest, 13-7 Sunday at Mark Light Field.
Miami took the three-game ACC series from the Wolfpack, two games to one, and improved to 13-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. NC State fell to 11-4 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.
John McLean (2-0), the third of four Miami pitchers, got credit for the win with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. He allowed two hits, walked two and struck out two. NC State starter Gib Hobson (3-1) took the loss after allowing nine runs, five earned, on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out one.
Jake Muyco led the Wolfpack with four hits in five at-bats, and Aaron Bates went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. In addition to Jay, Ryan Braun had two hits and two RBIs for Miami, and Brendan Katin had two hits in five trips. Both teams committed three errors, and the two pitching staffs combined to issue 10 walks.
The Hurricanes drew first blood, scoring once in the bottom of the first inning. Braun drew a one-out walk and stole second base. \ay followed with an RBI single through the left side of the infield to drive in Braun.
Miami scored five in the bottom of the second. With one down, Hobson walked Roger Tomas, and Walter Diaz singled to right on a hit-and-run play, putting runners on first and third with one away. Eddy Rodriguez, up next, swung at the first pitch and tapped a slow roller into no man's land along the third-base line for an infield single. Tomas scored on the play to make it 2-0. Danny Figueroa grounded into a force play for the second out, but center fielder Chris Engle lost Paco Figueroa's fly ball in the sun, dropping it for a two-base error that allowed Rodriguez and Danny Figueroa to score and give Miami a 4-0 lead. Braun made it 6-0 by driving the 1-1 pitch for a two-run homer to left-center, extending his hitting streak to 16 games.
The Wolfpack bounced back for two in the top of the third. With one away, Jonathan Diaz walked. One out later, Matt Devine singled to right, and the runners advanced to second and third when right fielder Paco Figueroa overran the ball for an error. Bates singled to center to drive in both runners and slice the Miami lead to 6-2.
Miami erupted for four more in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Danny Fiegueroa doubled into the left-field corner, and Hobson plunked Paco Figueroa with a pitch to put runners on first and second. Baun singled sharply to left to load the bases and chase Hobson, who gave way for Adam McLaurin. Jay grounded McLaurin's first pitch through the hole and into right field for a two-run single, driving in both Figueroas. Brian Aragon overran the ball in right field for an error, allowing Braun to score and Jay to advance all the way to third on the play. Valencia singled up the middle to drive in Jay from third base and give the Hurricanes a 10-2 lead.
The Wolfpack answered back with three runs in the top of the fifth. With one down, Diaz singled was safe at second when Tomas kicked Camp's grounder. With two out, Bates singled to right to drive in Diaz, and Camp came all the way around to score when Paco Figueroa's throw to the plate got away from the catcher for an error. Bates took second on the throw to the plate, and scored on Muyco's single to left, pulling NC State back to within five runs at 10-5.
The Pack continued to scratch back in the top of the sixth. Ramon Corona lined a one-out double into the left-field corner and came around to score on Camp's two-out RBI single off the shortstop's glove, cutting the lead to 10-6.
Jay smoked a one-out double to right in the bottom of the sixth and scored on Katin's two-out single to left. Katin was cut down trying to advance to second on the throw home, but the run scored to increase Miami's lead to 11-6.
The Hurricanes added two final runs in the bottom of the eighth. Paco Figueroa singled with one out and stole second. Braun struck out for the seond out, but Jay singled to drive in Figueroa, and Valencia doubled to right to score Jay all the way from first base.
Muyco led off the top of the ninth with a double into the left-field corner, and Lee Mezistrano singled to right to put runners on the corners with none out. Pinch-hitter Aaron Cone grounded out to drive in Muyco with the final run of the game.
NC State will return to action on Tuesday at UNC Greensboro. Game time is 4 p.m.
