Wolfpack Competes In Last Chance Meets

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Kelly Smoke provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 20-pound weight throw Saturday at Virginia Tech's Last Chance Meet and Julia Lucas shaved 10 seconds off her NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 3,000m at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational. While most of the NC State men's and women's indoor track & field teams were in Blacksburg, Va., a few of the distance runners went to South Bend, Ind., for some faster races in the Wolfpack's last chance to get more individuals qualified for the NCAA Championships that are March 11-12 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Lucas ran a career-best 9:23.99 in the 3,000m, placing fourth while Smoke reached a mark of 60-11.25 for fourth place in the weight throw. Magin Kebert, also running the mile at Notre Dame, posted a career-best 4:50.47. Angelina Blackmon missed the provisional time in the mile by only two seconds, finishing 11th at Notre Dame with a time of 4:49.66, the team's fastest this season. Trellanie Green ran her career-best time in the 400m, breaking a minute for her first time and finishing ninth with a 59.13.
On the men's side, Eric Hoverstad cleared a career-best 15-9 ½ in the pole vault while John Crews and Bryce Ruiz placed second and third respectively in the 3,000m at Virginia Tech. Crews was the runner-up with a time of 8:27.34 and Ruiz finished in 8:27.57. Mitchell Pope placed third in the shot put with a mark of 57-3 ¼ and Dexter Adams landed 24-4 ¼ in the long jump to place third. Omar Wells ran a career-best 49.95 for sixth place in the 400m. Michael Hill cleared 6-7 in the high jump to take fourth place and he also placed sixth in the triple jump, reaching 49-4 ¾.
Wesley Smith posted a 8:11.85 in the 3,000m at Notre Dame, the third fastest time in the ACC this season. Chris Kollar finished in 8:24.07.
NC State will now wait to see which of their provisional qualifiers will join Renee Gunning, who automatically qualified in the 5,000m, at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
