MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- With the fastest 50 freestyle field in NCAA history competing at the 2005 NCAA Men's Swimming Championship, NC State's Cullen Jones more than held his own while securing All-American Honors. Jones finished 13th in the finals heat with a time of 19.83 after his prelim time of 19.63 secured his national honor. The Wolfpack finished 24th in the team standings with four team points, with the best Wolfpack events still on tap as the Championship runs through Saturday, Mar. 26.
"For NC State to be in this field of speedy swimmers, that is very respectable," assistant coach Chad Onken said. "The Wolfpack has now scored points in a NCAA Championship for the first time since 2000."
Jones is the first Wolfpack All-American swimmer in five years, and the junior has been impressive all season, winning his third ACC Championship this season after winning twice as a sophomore.
"It is great to be back on the NCAA scoreboard here at NC State," head coach Brooks Teal said. "We still have our best event and a big point earner in the 200 medley relay tomorrow, so that is very exciting.
"Cullen did a great job in the 50 free. It is an event where you can not flinch, and he didn't. He held his spot at night and was impressive among a great field of swimmers."
