Wolfpack Falls Short Despite Chamberlin's Eighth Home Run

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky (12-9) scored two runs in each of the first two innings and held on to defeat NC State (27-14), 4-2 in the final game of pool play on Mar. 19. Jen Chamberlin hit her ACC-leading eighth home run of the season, and Shanna Smith hit a sacrifice fly to score the second run for NC State. Megan Dalthorp (3-1) lost for the first time in her collegiate career after allowing five hits and four runs in 1 and 2/3 innings pitched. Shaina Ervin pitched the rest of the game and allowed just four hits, but NC State couldn't rally to tie the game.
The Wolfpack is the No. 2 seed in the tournament, and will play Central Connecticut State University at 7 p.m. at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
Smith hit her sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, and Chamberlin cut it to 4-2 in the sixth with her home run. Heather Gelbard singled, Reneé LaCroix and Allison Cuculich recorded hits in the loss.
