RALEIGH, N.C. - Maryland rapped out nine extra-base hits Friday, three of them home runs, to defeat NC State 14-6 in the first game of an Atlantic Coast Conference series at Doak Field. The Terrapins improved to 9-4 with the win and moved to 3-1 in the ACC for the first time since 1983. NC State dropped to 13-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Maryland starter Chris Clem (1-1), a senior righthander, was not exactly razor-sharp, but he was effective enough, allowing six runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. He walked two, struck out four and hit four batters. Wolfpack reliever Phil Davidson (1-3) took the loss in relief of starter Jeff Stallings, who allowed four runs in six innings. Davidson worked just a third of an inning and was charged with three runs, all earned, on two wind-blown hits and a walk.
Jason Von Behren led the 14-hit Maryland attack with three hits, including a double and a home run, and four RBIs in five at-bats. Jordan Wilson went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, and Elliot Singletary had a double, a home run and four RBIs in four at-bats. Jake Muyco and Brian Aragon had two hits each for the Wolfpack, and Lee Mezistrano belted a grand-slam home run.
Maryland jumped to a quick lead in the top of the first. Singletary led off with a home run to left-center, his first of the season. Truan Mehl walked, and after Matt Camp made a diving catch of Will Frazier's liner to the right-center-field gap for the first out of the inning, Wilson singled to right and Dan Melvin walked to load the bases. Brian Jarisinski's single to left drove in Mehl and gave the Terps a 2-0 lead, but Von Behren followed with a grounder to third that Matt Devine turned into a nifty 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Clem got in trouble in the bottom of the third by losing command of his breaking pitch. Matt Camp led off and doubled to left. Bryan Kinneberg grounded to second to move Camp to third. Clem then hit Aaron Bates and Muyco with breaking pitches to load the bases. Mezistrano made it 4-2 with his grand slam, a towering drive to right field, his second homer of the season and the third homer of this career, two of which are grand slams.
The long ball came back to hurt Stallings in the top of the fourth when Jarosinski led off with a long home run to left field, slicing the NC State lead to a run at 4-3. The Terps tied the game in the top of the sixth. Melvin led off with a walk and went to third on Von Behren's one-out double to center field. Bobby Ryan got Melvin home with a sacrifice fly to center field, knotting the score at 4-4.
NC State regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Devine led off with a double to center field, and Aragon hit an opposite-field double off the wall in the left-field corner to drive in Devine and make it 5-4. Ramon Corona bunted Aragon to third base, and Clem lost another breaking ball, plunking Diaz to put runners on first and third. Camp got the insurance run in with a squeeze bunt up the third-base line, giving the Pack a 6-4 advantage.
Maryland jumped back in front in the top of the seventh, aided somewhat by very windy conditions. Singletary led off against Davidson and walked. Mehl's fly ball to center field got up the wind, eluding Camp, who watched helplessly as it fell for a double, putting runners at second and third with none out. Frazier popped up to first base for the first out of the inning, but Wilson's opposite-field fly ball down the right-field line fell into no man's land for an RBI double, scoring Mehl and tying the game at 6-6.
Adam McLaurin came in to pitch for the Wolfpack at that point, and he did not fare much better. Melvin struck out for the second out, but Jarosinski walked and Von Behren clobbered a three-run home into the wind in left giving Maryland a 9-6 lead.
The Terps blew the game open with six in the top of the ninth. Wilson led off and singled to right field, and Melvin doubled down the left-field line. With the infield drawn in, Jarosinski hit a chopper to Devine at third, and he threw to home plate to cut down Wilson for the first out of the inning. Melvin went to third on the play and came in to score on Von Behren's single to left. Ryan walked to load the bases, and Joe Palumbo walked to force in a run and make it 11-6. Singletary then made it 14-6 with a three-run double to right-center, and Frazier's two-out single up the middle drove in Singeltary to make the final score 15-6.
Notes: Muyco's two hits extended his hitting streak to 15 games.
The two teams will continue the three-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on WKNC-FM (88.1) and on gopack.com through Yahoo's subscription service. Live in-game stats will be available on gopack.com through the Gametracker.
