Monarchs Defeat NC State 23-13

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion won six of 10 matches Sunday, including two major decisions and a fall, to defeat NC State 23-13 at the ODU Field House. The Wolfpack fell to 5-6 with the loss. Old Dominion improved to 9-5.
The Monarchs jumped ahead early with a dramatic victory in the first match of the afternoon. At 174 pounds, the Wolfpack's Kevin Gabrielson held a 3-1 lead with 10 seconds remaining in the final period, but John Adams managed a takedown and a near fall before the buzzer went off to take a stunning 6-3 decision. Adam Wright followed with a 14-5 major decision over freshman Jeremy Colbert at 184, giving ODU a 7-0 lead.
NC State fought back to tie the team score at 7-7 when Zach Garren won a major decision, 11-3, over Shea Smith, and heavyweight Jainor Palma decisioned John Dolida 3-1 in sudden victory overtime. The Monarchs took complete control from there. Christian Staylor, ranked No. 13 nationally, defeated Garrett Cummings 11-3 for a major decision at 125, and B.J. Compton pinned the Wolfpack's Jeremy Hartrum at 4:49 in the 133 match, giving ODU a 17-7 lead. Shanon Slack made it 20-7 with a 9-3 decision over Jeff Breese at 133.
At that point, the Wolfpack needed two pins and a decision in the final three bouts in order to stage a comeback victory. Alex Hernandez defeated Hunter Davenport 4-3 at 149 to make it 20-10, but ODU clinched the team victory when the Pack's Kody Hamrah won a 5-3 decision over Nick Pullano at 157. ODU's Robby Gosnell defeated Ryan Nowicki 9-4 at 165 in the final bout of the afternoon.
NC State will return to action on Friday, February 11, with an Atlantic Coast Conference bout at Virginia. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
