
NC State Wrestling Defeats Virginia, 21-9

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - NC State won seven of 10 matches Friday night and defeated Virginia in Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling at UVa's Memorial Gym. The Wolfpack improved to 6-6 overall and 2-0 in ACC matches. Virginia falls to 4-10 overall and 0-3 in the ACC.
Redshirt-sophomore 125-pounder Garrett Cummings got the Wolfpack off to a quick start with a 10-5 decision over Virginia's Anthony Burke, but UVa's Byron Dunlap tied the team score at 3-3 with a 5-0 win over Matt Spengler at 133. Redshirt-sophomore Jeff Breese's 13-12 win over Virginia's Aaron Martin put the Wolfpack back in front at 6-3.
The Cavaliers battled back to tie the score again at 6-6 with Paul Dunstan's 4-1 win over Alex Hernandez at 149 pounds. The loss snapped a five-match winning streak for Hernandez, but NC State took the lead for good at 9-6 when Kody Hamrah took an 8-3 win over Paul Bjorlo at 157 pounds. The Wolfpack extended its lead to 12-6 with Rick Brownlee's 18-13 overtime win over Conor Manley at 165 pounds.
Kevin Gabrielson made it 15-6 for the Wolfpack with a 12-6 decision over Rocco Caponi at 174 pounds. The Cavaliers battled back to bring the gap to 15-9 in the 184-pound contest as Virginia's Kyle Narkiewicz took a 3-2 decision over Jeremy Colbert.
That was last call for the Cavaliers. NC State's Zach Garren stopped Scott Smith 8-2 at 197 pounds, and Jainor Palma took a 2-1 win in the heavyweight match against over Nick Smith to give NC State the overall victory and make the final score 21-9.
