Wolfpack Finishes Strong in Men's Swimming ACC Championship

ATLANTA, Ga. - NC State finished sixth in the 2005 Men's Swimming ACC Championship behind a second place finish in the 100 free by Cullen Jones. Jones finished with two ACC Championships, winning the 50 free and anchoring the winning 200 medley relay, as well as finishing second as the anchor of two other relays. NC State (321 points) got strong performances from Rob Yeager and Dan Velez in the 200 breaststroke, and also finished second in the 400 yard freestyle relays.
Virginia tallied 726.5 points in winning the Championship, while Florida State placed second with 580 points. Georgia Tech finished the meet in third place with 429 points, North Carolina in fourth with 412, Clemson in fifth with 323, NC State in sixth with 321, Virginia Tech in seventh with 289.5, Maryland in eighth with 273, Duke in ninth with 132 and Miami in tenth with 73.
Jones swam a 43.88 in the 100 free, but couldn't overtake the meet's most valuable swimmer, Virginia's Luke Anderson. Jones did defeat Anderson in the 50 free, successfully defending his 2004 ACC title. Jones now has won the 50 free in consectutive years, and he won the 100 free last year as well. He was a member of an ACC record 200 medley relay team in the first day of competition, splitting the anchor leg in one of the fastest swims in NCAA history.
Yeager finished fifth in his final ACC Championship in the 200 breast, swimming a 2:00.97, while Dan Velez, a transfer who became eligible in January, finished sixth with a strong 2:01.28.
Lyle Babcock finished seventh in the conference in the 200 butterfly, turning in a 1:50.73.
The 400 freestyle relay team of John Hudson, Scott Dettloff, Kevin Devine and Cullen Jones finished second with a time of 2:58.65, second fastest in the ACC.
