Pope Provisionally Qualifies In Shot Put

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Mitchell Pope won the shot put Saturday at the Carolina Last Chance Meet with a career-best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 58-5. The sophomore thrower from Hudson, N.C., led the NC State indoor track & field team in its first of two tune-ups before the NCAA Indoor Championships March 11-12.
Dexter Adams won the long jump with a mark of 24-3 and Chris Crawford was the runner-up in the weight throw with a mark of 54-2 1/2. Crawford also competed in the shot put, placing third with a heave of 48-3. Michael Hill was the runner-up in the triple jump, reaching 45-4 1/4, placed third in the high jump with a height of 6-7 3/4 and took fourth in the long jump with a distance of 20-4 3/4.
Antwan Graves finished third in the 60m hurdles and Nick Rizzon ran the mile in 4:26.56 for fourth place. Omar Wells placed fourth in the 400m, running a career-best 50.14, while Armand Quenum (51.66) and LT Dickens (52.57) finished seventh and eighth respectively. Eric Hoverstad cleared 15-3 1/4 in the pole vault for fourth place and Phillip Stafford ended up fifth in the mile with a time of 4:28.42. Matt Minnick ran the 60m in 7.08 and Kevin Davis took ninth place, two spots behind Minnick.
On the women's side Angelina Blackmon won the 800m, finishing within two seconds of meeting NCAA provisional qualifying standards at 2:11.88. Georgia Davis placed third with a time of 2:20.16. Kelly Smoke won the weight throw with a mark of 57-8 1/4 and Joya Rodgers was runner-up in the 60m with a time of 7.62.
Trellanie Green finished fourth in the 400m with a time of 1:00.47 and Laila Thomas placed fourth in both the high jump, clearing 5-4 1/4, and the long jump, reaching 16-9 1/4. She also ran the 60m hurdles and finished eighth with a time of 9.80. Jessie Yester ran the mile in 5:29.67 for fourth place. Cassandra Williams took fifth in the 60m with a time of 8.01 and Trellanie Lewis recorded a 1:04.80 in the 400m for sixth place.
