RALEIGH, N.C. - Wolfpack (8-1) softball shut down the George Washington Colonials (1-2) 12-0 in a five inning, mercy rule game in the Triangle Classic at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. Freshman Megan Dalthorp (1-0) pitched the third no-hitter in school history, allowing just one runner to reach base in striking out five and walking one. Sophomore Shaina Ervin hit a three-run home run in the first inning, her first of the season, to give NC State all of the offense it would need in the third shutout of the season as a team. Sophomore Heather Gelbard continued to swing the hottest bat on the team, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Reneé LaCroix singled twice in two at-bats to contribute to the 12 Wolfpack hits.
Dalthorp notched the five-inning no-hitter in just the first start of her career, and only the third appearance in the circle. She has struck out 12 batters to just one walk in 10 innings of work.
Ervin went yard in the first after another two-out rally for NC State. Sophomores Abbie Sims and Jen Chamberlin walked and singled, respectively, to bring up Ervin. Ervin homered to left field to make it 3-0.
The lead would blossom to 8-0 after two innings, as five runs on three hits and a Colonials' error provided the scoring. Freshman Lisa Nentwig and sophomore Jess Willems walked, and freshman Blair Harkey beat out an infield single to the pitcher to load the bases. Gelbard singled in a run, and the runners would advance on a passed ball with Willems scoring from third for a 5-0 lead. Gelbard and Harkey would score on an error as junior Tess Corona reached base. Corona would score on a passed ball later in the inning for the eight run margin.
Willems doubled to lead off of the third, and freshman Ashleigh Davis came in to pinch run. Senior Lee Hasper flied a ball to deep right field, but the ball was dropped as Davis scored and Hasper moved to third on the error for a 9-0 advantage. Gelbard was clutch once again, hitting a run scoring single up the middle to plate Hasper for a score or 10-0.
The final two Wolfpack runs crossed in the top half of the fifth, on four Wolfpack hits. Corona and sophomore Caroline Blount singled to get things started, and sophomore Jennifer Patterson hit a RBI singled down the left field line to score Corona. LaCroix hit an RBI single, her first RBI of the young season for the final 12-0 advantage.
