RALEIGH, N.C. - Michelle Green will become the newest member of the Wolfpack staff, joining the team after an All-American pitching career at the University of Georgia. A 2005 graduate, Green will coach the NC State pitching staff, which returns Shaina Ervin, who has won 22 games in two seasons for the Wolfpack and NFCA Southeast Region Second Team selection and All-ACC standout Abbie Sims.
"Michelle brings a championship mentality and the knowledge of how to be a successful pitcher," Navas said. "She has a great personality and mentality that meshes with our team. I look forward to having her in our Wolfpack family."
Green brings a wealth of pitching knowledge to the Wolfpack staff after earning two SEC Pitcher of the Year awards and garnering first-team All-SEC honors twice. She helped her Bulldogs team to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Super Regional berth her senior season.
A two-time All-American, finished her career at Georgia as the greatest pitcher in Bulldog history. Green is the all-time school leader in wins (104), ERA (1.30), shutouts (47.5) and strikeouts (1,070).
She posted a 39-8 record and 1.10 ERA in 2003, striking out 407 batters en route to her first All-America selection. As a senior in 2005, Green sported a 27-4 mark and 1.35 ERA, fanning 272 batters in 187 innings pitched.
Green is a recent graduate of the University of Georgia, receiving a B.S. in sport studies with an emphasis in business. She will be pursuing a Masters Degree at State in Sports Management.
As a pitching coach, Green will have plenty to work with, inheriting an intimidating pitching unit with the junior Sims at the helm. Last season Sims ranked 10th in the NCAA in strikeouts, picking up all conference honors and being named Team MVP for the second year. Fellow junior Shaina Ervin posted a 1.68 ERA, the fifth-best mark in the ACC, last season. Throughout the year she improved statistically in nearly every pitching category from her freshman season. Sophomores Megan Dalthorp and Brooke Isley will add valuable depth and arm strength at the end of the rotation for Green to mold and work with.
The 22-year old Green is a native of Duluth, Georgia and will officially join the Wolfpack staff in January. She will join a staff guided by Navas who, in her third year at NC State, holds an overall record of 408-186-1 as a head coach. Her tally ranks first in terms of winning percentage (.687) with a minimum five years at a four-year college but fewer than five years at the Division I level.
"Jay and I are excited about working with Michelle, can't wait for her to get here." Navas said. "It is tough hiring someone after the school year began. We got lucky finding Michelle."
The 2006 Wolfpack softball team will jump start the spring season with five games at the Tiger Invitational in Auburn, Ala., Feb. 10-12. Until the season begins, stay up to date with the team on GoPack.com.
