The NC State Men's Swimming team announced the signing of seven swimmers for the 2006-2007 season. The recruits signed letters of intent during the early signing period which ended last Wednesday. The seven recruits are from seven different states, five of which are not represented on the current team roster.
The signees are Taylor Godwin of West Newbury, Massachusetts, Danny Voss from Orlando, Florida, Derek Ernst from Grapevine, Texas, Nick Brittis of Hilton Head, South Carolina, Mason Lynn McGee from Shreveport, Louisiana, Andrew Keenan from Alpharetta, Georgia, and Phillip Potter of Plover, Wisconsin.
Taylor Goodwin is a Senior National Qualifier in the 50 Freestyle event and should make an immediate impact for the Pack in the sprint events. He won the 50 Free Championship at the Speedo Championship Series in 2005. He also brings some depth to the team with his ability to swim a multitude of events as he is also a multiple event Junior National Qualifier.
Danny Voss is a three time MVP, co-captain and school record holder in the 100 Breaststroke at Olympia High in Orlando. As a Y-National silver medalist in the 200 meter Breaststroke, the coaches look for him to add to the Pack's core of Breaststrokers and IM swimmers.
Derek Ernst is a TISCA Champion in the 100 Freestyle, 2005 District Champion in the 50 Freestyle and Regional Bronze Medalist in the 100 and 50 Freestyle events despite only a few years in competitive swimming. Coaches say that Derek has tremendous potential and will bolster the Wolfpack's strong sprint group.
Nick Brittis joins the Wolfpack's distance group and the coaches look for him to make an immediate impact as well. Nick is an avid triathlete and open water swimmer who placed second in the Open Water Championships in Fort Lauderdale. He is also a 2004 and 2005 Junior National Qualifier in the 400 Freestyle event.
Mason Lyn McGee is a multiple time Louisiana high school state champion and has made huge strides this season that earned him and his teammates an invitation to Senior Nationals for the 800 Freestyle Relay event. He is also a Junior National Qualifier in the 100 and 200 Freestyle events, and the Wolfpack will be counting on him to add strength to the team's mid-distance freestyle events.
Andrew Keenan joins the Pack from the nationally acclaimed program Swim Atlanta, where he appears on their top-ten all-time list seven times. He is a 10-time Georgia High School State Finalist and a former team MVP at Northview High School. He will be counted on to contribute in the sprint and mid-distance freestyle events.
Phillip Potter is the team MVP from his high school, Stevens Point Area Senior High, and is a four-time varsity letter winner. He is two-time team captain and varsity record holder 100 and 200 Freestyle. He is expected to add depth to the mid-distance freestyle events and is a member of the 2005 USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Team.
The seven athletes will join NC State as freshmen in the fall of 2006.
