ATLANTA - The Wolfpack Men's Swimming and Diving team took 11 out of 13 events from the Yellow Jackets en route to a 134-107 win and a 3-0 conference record.
The veterans started things off on the right foot for the Wolfpack with the 400 Yard Medley Relay team of Kevin Velleca, Rick Scott, Scott Dettloff, and Cullen Jones burning a time of 3:24.83 to win the event. The 400 Freestyle Relay team also outpaced the Yellow Jackets by nearly four seconds with the team of Peter Ranstead, John Hudson, Jones, and Dettloff giving the Pack another relay win in a time of 3:07.88.
Relays were certainly not the only bright spot for the Pack during the meet, freshman distance specialist Andrew Lester winning both the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle events. Lester swam away from the competition in the 1000 yard event, beating his closest competitor by more than 11 seconds putting up an impressive 9:22.23, a full 3.8 seconds better than his already national top 50 time.
Wolfpack freshmen divers Alexander Dambly and Austin Hampton continued to make huge contributions to the team both turning in solid performances on the boards. Hampton turned in a first place performance in the one-meter event, just edging out Tech's Tony Burkhardt by less than two points. Dambly and Hampton combined to finish in second and third respectively in the three-meter event behind Burkhardt who leads the conference in that event.
Wolfpack senior Dan Velez swam the 100 breaststroke for the first time this year and won the event handily with a time of 57.12 seconds, a time which should put him well into the national top 50 times for that event. Another senior, Kevin Velleca, won the 100 yard backstroke event, improving his already number one in the conference and national top 50 time in the event to 49.96 seconds.
