Sparked by Jones' blistering 19.35, the second fastest time in school history in the 50 freestyle, the men's swimming and diving team from NC State jumped to an early lead after day one of the Terrapin Cup Invite. The Wolfpack has 342.5 points, with West Virginia in second nearly 80 points back. The team won both relay events, the 50 freestyle, the 500 freestyle and swept the top-two places in the 1-meter diving competition for an impressive start. Jones, who in the prelims posted the fastest time in the NCAA, won the finals with an equally impressive 19.62, the ninth fastest time in school history. Jones has now swam three sub 20 second times in the 50 free on the season, and hold the top-3 marks nationally at this point in the season.
Andrew Lester continued to impress in the distance events, winning the prelims and then taking the final heat in the 500 freestyle. It was his team leading sixth first place finish, as the freshmen has not lost a 500 or 1000 freestyle event this season.
Austin Hampton and Alexander Dambley finished 1-2 in the 1-meter diving competition, as the freshmen duo continue to dominate the boards. Hampton won his fifth diving event, while Dambley posted his fourth top-two performance.
Steven Cowling finished second in the 200 IM with a 1:50.78, just missing the Wolfpack top-10 all-time record books.
The relays were again dominant and impressive for the men, as they took the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay in convincing fashion. The 200 free team of Peter Ranstead, Kevin Velleca, Scott Dettloff and Cullen Jones turned in a 1:20.26, easily the fastest time in the ACC this season. Jones had another stellar time in an unofficial relay split, swimming a 18.62 in his anchor 50 free leg, one of the fastest times in NCAA history.
The quartet of Velleca, Dan Velez, Scott Dettloff and Jones won the 400 medley as well, swimming a 3:18.96.
