RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State volleyball team lost 3-1 Friday night at home to Miami by scores of 31-33, 30-28, 30-27, 30-15 in Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack (6-8, 0-6 ACC) took a 1-0 lead and kept the next two games close, but when the Hurricanes (8-5, 3-2 ACC) rallied to take game three, Miami took that momentum and rolled to an easy victory in game four.
"We got distracted by some things that we have no control over," said NC State head coach Mary Byrne. "We wanted to just take care of one play at a time and prevent Miami from making runs on us. Stephanie Sims was supposed to start for us tonight, but she sprained her ankle in pregame warmups and that kind of threw us off. We showed some great heart, but we've got to find that hunger at 25-25 to take those games."
Senior middle blocker Stefani Eddins, who leads the ACC in both attack percentage and blocks per game, led the Wolfpack with a career-high 21 kills, hitting at a .357 attack percentage to go with six blocks, three of which were solos. Her fellow co-captain, senior middle blocker Adeola Kosoko, added 13 kills and led the team with a .423 attack percentage and 17 digs to go with five blocks and a pair of service aces. Junior setter Melissa Rabe posted 40 assists on the night.
After six lead changes, NC State captured the first game and after six more lead changes in game two, Miami slipped past the Pack to even the match 1-1. NC State jumped out to a 14-9 lead in game three, but Miami stormed back to take 10 of the next 11 points. The lead changed twice more before the score was tied at 25-25, where Karla Johnson delivered three of her team high 15 kills to lead the Hurricanes to victory.
Johnson also led Miami with six blocks, along with 12 digs while Francheska Savage registered 14 kills, five blocks and six digs. Ciara Michel put away 11 kills with a team-best .400 attack percentage and four blocks, while Ann Gallo led her squad with 21 digs and Jill Robinson was credited with 52 assists.
NC State returns to action Saturday when it hosts Florida State at 5:00 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum.
