CARY, N.C. - NC State women's soccer fell to visiting Clemson 3-1 on Sunday, Oct. 23. Clemson tallied three second half goals to NC State's one, to overtake the Wolfpack on its senior day at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The Tigers' Courtney Foster tallied the first and third goals and Kelly Schneider had the game-winner. NC State's goal was scored by Lydia McBath. Senior goalkeeper Kim Selz had three saves for the Wolfpack, while Clemson's Ashley Phillips also had three stops. NC State will play its final game of the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29, at No. 8 Virginia.
Clemson didn't waste anytime trying to get up on NC State early. The Tigers' Courtney Foster took a shot on goal in the first 16 seconds immediately following the kick-off. Fortunately for the Wolfpack, senior goalkeeper Kim Selz was there in the center of her box for the save. NC State took a bit longer to get its offensive game going. Freshman defender Kasie Shover was the first to get it going for NC State. She worked to steal the ball from a Clemson midfielder, then moved down the left-center of the field to get a strike on the ball and sent it wide. Sophomore Jessica O'Rourke took a shot one minute later from nearly the same spot, but it too went wide. It wasn't until the 27th minute that senior Lydia McBath put her attacking skills to work. She took a pass down the right sideline from junior Carol Tognetti near midfield from about 15 yards. McBath's shot was saved by Ashley Phillips near the left post. Clemson fired back with a solid strike by Amber Funk on the left side. Selz poised herself near the left post to make the save. McBath had her second shot on goal in the perido with just under three minutes remaining, but it too was saved by Phillips. Shots were tied 5-to-5 heading into the break. Selz finished with three first half saves, while the Tigers' Phillips collected two. Clemson had the lone corner kick after a shot by Lydia Vandenbergh was blocked by NC State with about 12 minutes to go.
After no goals were scored in the first half, both teams went to work in the second. Just as it did after the opening kick-off, Clemson used the first touch as an opportunity to score. Within the first 46 seconds the Tigers posted the first goal of the match. Foster collected a rebound off the right post after Candice Hein attempted her first shot on goal. The Tigers scored against just over a minute later at 47:23. Following an injury timeout for NC State, Clemson used a restart to send in a cross. Allison Graham struck from the right side about 10 yards from the 18-yard box corner. Schneider crossed in from the left side to the center of the box and headed it in. With Clemson up 2-0, the Wolfpack charged on. McBath, who already had two shots on goal in the first half used her third attempt to net her fourth goal of the season. Prior to her shot, Shover used a free kick just off the center of the half circle, but her shot hit the crossbar. McBath was there on the left side to put the ball into the bottom left corner of the net at 60:36. Three minutes later, Clemson's Foster scored her second goal of the match, again with some help from Graham. Graham dribbled down the left sideline and passed off to Foster who was inside the box, about 12 yards out center at 63:16.
