CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - NC State women's soccer fell 2-0 at No. 8 Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Wolfpack finished the 2005 slate with an overall record of 6-12-0 and 2-8-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The win boosted Virginia to 13-4-1 and 8-2-0 in ACC action. Despite holding Virginia scoreless in the first, NC State gave up two second half goals. The Cavaliers scored at 53:53 and again at 66:15 on goals from Jen Remond and Noelle Keselica. NC State's senior goalkeeper Kim Selz made six saves and allowed both of Virginia's goals.
The score was tied 0-0 at the half, but Virginia led in shots 9-to-2, including four shots on goal. NC State senior Kim Selz made four terrific saves - two of which were diving stops to keep the score at nil each. The Wolfpack took nearly 27 minutes to fire off its first of two shots. Junior midfielder Mandela Schumacher-Hodge posted the Pack's first attempt, a one touch off a header near the top of the half circle. Sophomore Jessica O'Rourke used a free kick on the Cavaliers' half of the field to sent the pass to Schumacher-Hodge up the middle. Virginia's goalkeeper Christina de Vries was there to make the save at the left post. Six minutes later, early in the 34th minute, freshman Lindsay Vera took a nice shot from the top of the half circle as well, but her shot went high to the right. Virginia's Jen Redmond led with three shots, one on goal and three others had a shot on goal as well. The team's leading scorer, Jess Rostedt, had two shots, neither on frame. She used a cross from the right side just inside the box to set up a scoring opportunity, but NC State's Selz was there for the punch out. Virginia maintained possession for nearly the entire half as it tallied four corner kicks. The Cavs did record six fouls, allowing the Wolfpack to move the ball up the field, deeper into its territory.
Virginia took less than eight minutes to put its first goal on the board. At 53:53, Redmond, who had already led the game in shots, posted her fourth shot and this time it went in. From 20 yards out she sent a ball towards the left corner. Selz was there for the initial save but lost it in between her legs. The Wolfpack's senior Lydia McBath used a header four minutes later to get in a shot attempt, but it went wide. The Cavaliers scored their second goal of the match at 66:15 on a combination play ending on a shot by Noelle Keselica from 20 yards out on the right side. Kelly Hammond and Redmond set up the play for Keselica's shot that landed in the bottom left corner. The Wolfpack worked to make a fourth attempt on goal with 11 minutes remaining to cut into the 2-0 deficit. Freshman Ashleah Dingle pushed down the right sideline and worked into the right side of the box for the shot attempt towards the left top corner. Virginia posted two shots in the final four minutes and held the Wolfpack scoreless for the half. Overall, UVa led in shots 19-4 and did not allow a Wolfpack corner kick.
